Biography

Dick Chopping was born in Lahore, where he learned to play field hockey in his youth. He was proficient enough to be selected for the Pakistan national team, but it was not until he moved to Canada and captained the Toronto Field Hockey Club that he got to play at the Olympics. Representing Canada, he was part of that country’s delegation to the 1964 Tokyo Games, where the nation lost six of its seven matches and did not advance beyond the group stage; Chopping appeared in every game. He continued to play through the 1960s and, by career, was a chartered accountant. The 1964 Canadian Olympic men’s hockey team, including Chopping, was inducted into the Field Hockey Canada Hall of Fame in 2016.
