István Bethlen was the son of the former Prime Minister of Hungary who held office from 1921 to 1931. His father, also called István, was a keen polo player and father and son often played on the same team. István Jr. played in the drawn game (8-8) against Germany at the 1936 Olympics and then the replay, and bronze medal match against Mexico, which ended in 16-6 and 16-2 defeats respectively.
