Biography

Joseph Howard was a member of the Glen Echo Country Club, site of the 1904 Olympic golf competition. He was a merchant, President of the W. P. Howard Commission Company. In May 1908, Howard met a gruesome death. He was playing golf at Glen Echo when it began to rain heavily. He took shelter under a large oak tree, but was struck by lightning and died instantly. His caddy, 12-year-old Edward Booksteller, was standing nearby but survived. Two doctors who were members of the club quickly came to help Howard, but he was so electrically charged that they could not even touch the body for minutes.
