Wallace Shaw

Wallace Shaw was a member of the Tekoa Country Club in Westfield, Massachusetts, so he had quite a trip to get to St. Louis in 1904. He was in the first group off the tee in qualifying, paired with Raymond Havemeyer, who opened the tournament. When Shaw’s name was called to tee off, there was a delay, until he came running to the tee with his bag, explaining that his train was delayed and he had only just arrived. Needless to say, he did not play well, shooting 209 in the qualifying. He qualified for the second flight of the consolation tournament where he lost his first round match.

Shaw was a dentist who was born in Watervliet, New York, but his family moved to Springfield, Massachusetts when he was an infant. He attended the Philadelphia Dental College of Temple University, obtaining his degree in 1895. He practiced dentistry in Westfield for 55 years, retiring in 1951. Shaw’s hobbies were golf, hunting, fishing, and raising flowers. He was a charter member of the Tekoa Country Club. In 1903 he organized the Westfield Shooting Club and became its first President. Shaw then helped organize the Westfield Rod and Gun Club, and was a charter member.
