László Cerva played hockey and ice hockey at the same time, according to the customs of the age. He won the Budapest high school championship in both sports in 1929 and 1930. Starting from 1930 he played hockey in the colors of Amateur HC, and from 1938 of Magyar HC. After World War II he continued to play in MAFC, MTK, Bp. Textiles, Postás, Törekvés and BVSC. He won the Hungarian championship a total of eight times during his career.

Between 1931 and 1942 he played for the Hungarian national team 13 times. He was a member of the Hungarian hockey team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Under the name of Cseri he played in all four matches and scored one goal.

He ended his sports career in 1959, so his wish to play with his son in the same team was fulfilled.

Starting from 1950 he already worked as a coach. As a coach, he won one championship in ice hockey and six championships in hockey. Between 1950 and 1956 he was the Secretary General of the Hungarian Hockey Association. In 1957 he took part in the reorganization of the Hungarian Hockey Association, where he was a member of the board and secretary general until 1989.
