Biography

Indian sportsman Manuel Frederick began his career as a footballer before switching to field hockey. Frederick played in goal for several domestic clubs, including the Army’s school team in Bengaluru, and the Mohun Bagan club in Kolkata. In 1971 he made début for the India national team, playing as their goalkeeper for seven years. One year later he won bronze at the München Olympics, playing in eight of India’s nine matches. Frederick also played in two editions of the Hockey World Cup: 1973 in the Netherlands and 1978 in Argentina. In 2019 he was honoured with the Dhyan Chand Award for Lifetime Achievement by India’s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
