Biography

G. Nandy Singh began playing hockey while studying at the Government College in Lahore, Pakistan, serving as captain of their hockey team in 1945 and 1946. After the partition of British India to India and Pakistan in 1947, he moved to Calcutta and played for Bengal when he was selected to the 1948 Indian Olympic team. At the Olympics, Singh played in a preliminary round match against Spain that India won 2-0 and the team went on to win a gold medal.

In 1949 Singh joined the Indian Navy and from 1949-58 played for Services, captaining the team in 1952-54 and 1957-58. He was selected to his second Olympic team in 1952 and again played in one match, this time a semi-final against Great Britain which India won 3-1, earning his second gold medal. A career military man, Singh retired from the Indian Navy as a commander. During his military service, Singh was secretary of the Services Sport Control Board from 1970-74, was commandant of the Naval School of Physical Training, and was a member of the Board of Governors of Indira Gandhi College of Physical Education and Training from 1993-94.

Singh also remained active in Indian hockey circles. He was vice-president of the Asian Hockey Federation from 1974-78 and was vice-chairman of the National Selection Committee for the Indian Hockey Federation in 1981, and then chairman from 1983-85. He managed the Indian 1984 Olympic hockey team and organized many hockey tournaments in India. Singh was the Indian chef-de-mission at the 1970 and 1974 Asian Games and was secretary of the Technical Conduct Committee at the 1982 Asian Games.
