Gilbert Kwemoi Soet had a promising start to his track and field career when he won gold in the 1,500 metres at the 2014 African Youth Games in Gaborone, Botswana. Soet’s performance earned him a place on the Kenyan team for the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China. He repeated his success from the African Youth Games by winning the 1,500 metres title at the Youth Games, beating Mulugeta Assefa by more than three seconds. The following year he won silver at the African U20 Championships in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Sadly Soet died in August 2021 after developing an illness whilst at a training camp in Iten in western Kenya. He was 23.
