Biography

Fencer Helmuth Resch participated in the 1960 Rome Olympics. With the Austrian sabre team, he was eliminated in the pool stage. Individually, he reached the second round but was then also eliminated. In 1955-56 and 1959 Resch was Austrian épée champion, and in 1960 was the national sabre champion.

Resch became far better known as a wood scientist and researcher. He studied in Wien (Vienna), and in America at Berkeley, California, and the Oregon State University. He led the College of Environmental Science and Forestry at the University of New York and became president of the Society of Wood Science and Technology. In 1992, Resch returned to Wien (Vienna) and was named professor at the University of Vienna. He became an executive board member of the Institute for Wood Research. After his retirement he lived alternately in Austria and the United States.
