Biography

Fencer Josef Ritz was a substitute without appearing on the Austrian foil team that finished an unfortunate fourth at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Individually, he was eliminated in the second of five rounds. He also acted as an international judge at the same Games. A member of the German Wehrmacht, Ritz was killed in action in 1943 at the Eastern Front at Kharkiv, Russia, now Ukraine.
