Biography

Jack Guittet’s first major international podium finish in fencing came at the 1958 World Championships, where he took gold and bronze with the foil and épée teams respectively. He helped defend that bronze the following year and also competed at the 1959 Mediterranean Games, where he won gold in both of those events, as well as in the individual épée. His next stop was the 1960 Rome Olympics, but he failed to medal in either the individual or team épée tournaments.

In 1961 Guittet became world champion in the individual épée and also took silver with the team. In 1962 he captured gold with the team, while in 1963 France won silver in that competition. He then attended his second Olympics in 1964 in Tokyo, where he was eliminated in the semi-finals of the individual épée, but won bronze in the team version. His final major international medal came at the 1965 World Championships, with gold in the team épée.

Following his retirement from active competition, Gutittet remained involved in the administration of his sport and was the president of the French Fencing Federation from 1977 through 1981. His wife, Françoise Gouny, was also an Olympic fencer, having competed in the individual foil in 1948. By career, he was an engineer.
