Biography

Gyula Iványi was the first international representative from Hungary in sabre fencing. In 1894 he took part in a tour of Italy, where he fenced against the best Italian sabreurs. In 1895, MAC Budapest hosted the first national sabre fencing competition, where Iványi won the gold medal and the Great Silver Cup of the Minister of Defense. In 1896, at the MAC international competition, he defeated Luigi Barbasetti, the greatest fencer of the era. At the Paris Olympics Iványi finished fifth in sabre, competing for MAC Budapest. After the Paris Olympics, he retired from competition and worked as a bank officer and general manager of a savings bank.
