Biography

Fencer Brian Hamilton attended Clongowes Wood College in County Kildare before going to Trinity College, where he became a member of the Dublin University fencing team. He was appointed captain and was in their team that won the Irish Universities’ Championship in 1960. Hamilton was selected for the 1960 Roma (Rome) Olympics after fulfilling the IAFF selection committee’s requirements by reaching the semi-final of an international tournament outside Ireland during the season leading up to the Games. In Roma (Rome), however, Hamilton competed in the individual foil and team épée, without progressing beyond the first round of either.

Indian-born Hamilton was also a fine cricketer and was a member of the Phoenix Cricket Club in Dublin. By profession he was a business consultant. He was the last surviving member of the six-strong Irish fencing team at the 1960 Roma (Rome) Olympics, dying in 2026.
