Johannes Kolling was a civil engineer who was born in the Dutch East Indies. At the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, he competed in the individual sabre tournament but lost all three of his bouts in the first round and was eliminated. In the following year, he returned to the East Indies via the United States. Kolling was first married to Maria Kempen and later to Jeanne Arnoudine Prins.
