Unlike most other officers Per Karsten came from a craftsman’s family; his father owned a bakery. In 1886, he entered the Svea Artillery Regiment as a second lieutenant. Successively, he was promoted to lieutenant (1891), captain (1899), major (1911) and eventually to lieutenant colonel in 1916, the year in which he retired. In 1890-91, he attended the Spanish Riding School in Wien (Vienna). He was made a Knight of the Order of the Sword and of the Bavarian Military Merit Order as well as Officer of the Italian Order of St. Mauritius and St. Lazarus.
At the 1912 Olympic Games, Croneborg acted as a judge in the dressage. In Borg near Norrköping he was breeding thoroughbreds including two Derby winners. He also acted as deputy of the remonteerings commission. He remained unmarried.
