Biography

Władysław Segda was one of the pioneers of Polish fencing, not only as an athlete but also an official in the Polish Fencing Association and the Polish Olympic Committee. He fought with all types of weapons and became individual Polish Champion in each of them, winning 13 national titles. In 1930 and 1934, he won two team bronze medals at the unofficial World Championships. In World War I Segda fought in the Austro-Hungarian army and subsequently became a military policeman. During World War II he took part in the defense against the Germans and at the end of the war fought in the Polish Armed Forces in the West. After the war he emigrated to Scotland. The actress Dorota Segda is his granddaughter.
