James Wong was born in the Federation of Malaya in 1953 and came to Singapore after joining the Air Force. Wong took up the sport of fencing, which saw him win silver at the South East Asian Games in 1989, 1991, and 1993. Along with compatriot Ronald Tan he was selected to represent Singapore at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Wong practiced for the Games by making fencing weapons out of bamboo in his kitchen, spending many months training. In 1993 he was one of the co-founders of Z Fencing, the first club of its type in Singapore. Wong later became the national coach and the Vice-President of the Singapore Fencing Association.
