Biography

Midfielder Harald Irmscher was a member of the East German squad that won the bronze medal at the 1972 München Olympics, following a 2-2 draw, after extra-time, against the Soviet Union. During the period of extra-time, neither team tried to win, because they knew a draw would secure both of them a medal. Irmscher was in the East German team that surprisingly beat West Germany 1-0 in the 1974 World Cup.

Irmscher played 36 international matches between 1966-74 and scored three goals. He also played 12 matches with the GDR Olympic team. Domestically, he played with BSG Motor Zwickau, and then from 1968-76 with FC Carl Zeiss Jena. In 1970 he helped Jena to win the East German Championship as well as the East German Cup twice, in 1972 and 1974.

After his playing career, Irmscher became a football coach, mostly working with the famous East German coach Bernd Stange and, between 1983-88 was Stange’s assistant with the East German national team. From 1988-2005 Irmscher was a youth coach in Jena, and from 2005-07 teamed up with Stange again at Apollon Limassol, and the pair then took charge of the Belarus national team between 2007-11.
