Biography

Goalkeeper Bernd Jakubowski was on the East German football (soccer) squad at the 1980 Moskva Olympics that won the silver medal after losing the final against Czechoslovakia 1-0. As he was the replacement goalkeeper, he only played one match at the Moskva Games.

Domestically, Jakubowski played with Hansa Rostock (1971-76) and then Dynamo Dresden (1976-86). Jakubowski helped Dresden to win the GDR championships in 1977 and 1978, and also the GDR cup in 1982, 1984, and 1985. His career ended during the European Cup game against West German club FC Bayer Uerdingen when he sustained a shoulder injury during the first half of the match. Dresden lost that game 7-3 after a lead of 2-0 at half-time. Jakubowski later became a soccer coach and owned a fitness studio. From 1999-2001 he was sporting manager of Dynamo Dresden and later died in 2007 due to cancer.
