Biography

Czibor was one of the players on the Hungarian football team that dominated international football the early 1950s, the so-called “Golden Team”. A small left-winger with a powerful shot, he contributed to winning the 1952 Olympic title. In 1953, the Hungarians upset England at Wembley, winning 6-3. The Hungarians where the red-hot favourites for the 1954 World Cup, and they reached the final with ease. Despite a 2—0 lead (the second goal scored by Czibor), the “Magical Magyars” lost 2—3 to West Germany. Domestically, Czibor won titles with Ferencváros (1949) and Honvéd (1954, 1955), scoring 100 goals in his Hungarian league appearances. Following the Hungarian Revolt, Czibor moved to Spain and assumed Spanish citizenship. Playing for FC Barcelona, he won two more league titles (1959 and 1960), as well as the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, a precursor to the UEFA Cup, in 1960.
