Biography

Nigerian footballer Peter Fregene had a lengthy career as a goalkeeper, playing for Stationery Stores FC and ECN in Lagos throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Popularly known as “The Flying Cat” Fregene helped both teams to win the Nigerian FA Cup during his career. From 1968 to 1971 he was the first choice goalkeeper for the national team, which saw him play in the football tournament at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. After being dropped from the Nigerian team he was recalled to their squad for the 1982 Africa Cup of Nations in Libya. Nigeria lost their final group match 3–0 with Fregene scoring an own goal in the 81st minute.
