Biography

Kleitomakhos won both the pankration (216 BCE) and boxing (212 BCE) titles at Olympia. He shares this honor only with the redoubtable Theagenes of Thasos. At Isthmia, Kleitomakhos won the boxing, wrestling, and pankration titles on the same day.

In the boxing tournament in 212 BCE, he won an early round against Aristonicus, a protege of King Ptolemy IV of Egypt. The crowd was initially cheering for Aristonikos because they were pleased that he had the courage to stand up to Kleitomakhos. Kleitomakhos stopped and asked the crowd, “Have I committed a foul or broken the rules? Would you prefer an Egyptian to carry off the Olympic wreath by beating Greeks?” The spectators then changed and rooted for Kleitomakhos who eventually won.

Kleitomachos also quite abstemious in his training, abstaining from sex during training. Somewhat of a prude, he hated foul language and off-color jokes It was rumoured he even turned away if he saw dogs mating.
