Biography

Yvonne Van Bets starting competing in gymnastics in 1946. The third of seven siblings, her father encouraged her to study sewing classes in the evening, but Van Bets was more active and found it boring, turning to gymnastics. She joined La Royale Saint-Gilloise Club in Brussels and qualified for the 1948 Olympics by finishing fourth in the Belgian Championships. Van Bets later competed at the 1950 World Championships, and at three Belgian Championships. A severe injury she sustained to her hand in 1953 ended her competitive career, but she continued to coach and help train young gymnasts at her club into her 60s.

Date of birth also seen listed as 24 October 1913, but the year of 1913 is wrong. Photographs of her at the 1948 Olympics have the definite appearance of a teenager, and an interview she gave in 2008 noted that she was only 19 at the time of the 1948 Olympics.
