Biography

Maritta Bauerschmidt was a member of East Germany’s women’s gymnastics team, winning the bronze medal in the team all-around event at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Individually she placed 12th in the all-around and 8th as her best apparatus result on balance beam. Bauerschmidt earned four podiums at the East Germany nationals, and then switched to rhythmic gymnastics in 1970, winning a silver medal at the 1971 East German championships. Bauerschmidt later studied sports at the DHfK in Leipzig and became a sports teacher in Budapest, Hungary, and later in Berlin.
