Biography

Gitta Escher won an all-around bronze medal with the East German female gymnastics team at the 1976 Montréal Olympics. She also qualified for the finals in the floor exercise, horse vault, and balance beam events, but failed to win a medal, finishing sixth, fifth and sixth, respectively. In the individual all-around she placed sixth as well. Domestically, Escher earned five national titles in 1975 and 1976. She later became a graduated sports teacher and worked with her home club SC Chemie Halle, after re-unification renamed SV Halle.
