Biography

Erzsébet Balázs took up gymnastics in 1938, when she enrolled at Semmelweis University, from which she graduated with a physical education degree. She started her career with Budapest SE, but in 1941 switched to Postás SE and stayed with them until she retired in 1953. With Postás, Balázs won seven Hungarian team titles (1943, 1944, 1946, 1949, 1951-53), but never medaled individually at the Hungarian championships. Internationally Balázs competed at the 1948 Olympics and 1949 World Student Games, winning a team silver at both those tournaments. After finishing her sporting career, Balázs worked as a gymnastics coach and judge. She was the coach of Budapest Honvéd until 1971, becoming their head coach in 1960. From 1972-73, Balázs was the coach of Debreceni VSI and from 1974-77 she was head coach of the Hungarian national team. Balázs was married to fellow Hungarian gymnast László Baranyai, who won a team bronze at the 1948 Olympics.
