Biography

István Herczeg started his sports career in Szeged, and in 1905, at the age of 18, was a national individual all-around gymnastics champion. Despite this, he was not selected for the 1908 Olympics, so he began working as a journalist, while continuing to compete, with his articles being published in the Szeged Journal. Herczeg showed remarkable form before the 1912 Olympics and finally got to compete at the Games. Whilst in Stockholm, he wrote a book about the details of the tournament, which was one of the first Olympic reports, and as such, is an important Olympic historical document. In addition to his book, he also published a collection of poetry. Herczeg fought on the northern (Russian) front during World War I. After his active sports career, he continued to work as a journalist, and enjoyed gardening as a hobby. Later he moved to Szatymaz, where he died in 1949.
