Jean-Pierre Thommes represented the Société de Gymnastique in Bonnevoie, now a suburb of the city of Luxembourg. In 1911, he competed at the World Championships in Turin. Thommes placed joint fifth at the first national trials for the Olympics in January 1912. After the final trials in June, he was one of 16 gymnasts selected for the Olympics. At the Olympic Games in Stockholm, he was named flagbearer of his team. In gymnastics, the team from Luxembourg including Jean-Pierre Thommes placed fifth and last in the free system team event but missed bronze by less than one point in the European system team event. In the individual all-around, he placed 22nd. In 1913, he competed at the World Gymnastics Championships in Paris.
In 1928 and 1952, Thommes was active as a gymnastics judge at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam and Helsinki, respectively. He was also a versatile track & field athlete and was entered for the decathlon at the 1912 Olympics but did not start. He owned an electric shop in Bonnevoie.
