Biography

Bill Tom went into the military during World War II but after the war, enrolled at Cal State Los Angeles. In 1949 he won the AAU title on the horse vault, and had several podium finishes on other apparatuses. He competed for the Los Angeles Turners. Tom also competed in diving and placed fifth in an AAU championship, year and event unknown. He worked as a teacher in high school and college, and in 1957-59 also taught at Normal University in Taiwan on a Fulbright Award. Tom later became a world class age-group badminton player and also competed in table tennis and surfed at a high level. He was inducted into the US Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1992.
