Biography

Klaus Gruner was on the gold medal winning East German team at the 1980 Moskva Olympics, winning the final after a 23-22 overtime victory against the Soviet Union. He played 112 international matches with the GDR national team and scored 295 goals. In 1974, the team won a silver medal and in 1978 a bronze medal at the Worlds.

Domestically, Gruner played with SC Leipzig and helped them win the 1972 GDR Championship, and then moved to ASK Frankfurt on Oder, helping them win East German titles in 1974, 1975, 1982, and 1983, also adding the 1975 European Cup of Champions. In the GDR he was a soldier in the National People’s Army NVA and studied sports. After re-unification he worked with an insurance company, and also started a coaching career.
