Biography

As a high school student, Ferenc Velkey won Budapest championships both in handball and in basketball. As a member of the senior handball team of Elektromos he won the national championship three times. Meanwhile as a basketball player, between 1936 and 1944 he won six championships with the BSZKRT and participated at the 1935 European Championships. As the Hungarian basketball team did not start, he participated only as a handball player at the 1936 Olympics and finished fourth.

After the Olympics, he got a job at the BSzKRt, so he only played basketball and played for the national team 27 times. He took the referee exam in 1935 and then started coaching in 1941. He obtained an international referee qualification in 1950 and worked in this field for 25 years. From 1979 he was a permanent inspector of the International Federation (FIBA).
