Biography

Igor Vasilyev was a Russian handball player who won gold at the Olympics and the World Championships. Vasilyev played for Kaustik Volgograd in Russia as well as handball clubs in Spain, Germany, and Switzerland. He was part of the Unified Team that competed at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and won the gold medal. The following year, this time representing Russia, Vasilyev won gold at the World Handball Championships. At the 1994 European Handball Championships the Russian team won silver after losing to Sweden in the tournament’s final.

After his playing career Vasilyev went to live in Germany for 20 years where he coached at the Nieder-Olm and Wehrheim teams. When he returned to Russia he worked as the Vice-President of his former club Kaustik.
