Biography

Fencer and modern pentathlete Udo, father of Axel Birnbaum, was the Austrian individual épée champion in 1961. He participated in the 1960 Rome and 1964 Tokyo Olympics in modern pentathlon, placing 12th with the Austrian team, and was tenth in 1964. Individually, he came 37th and 24th, respectively. At Tokyo and at Mexico City in 1968, Birnbaum also participated in fencing. On both occasions, he finished ninth with the Austrian épée team. Individually, he was eliminated in the third round in 1968.
