Rower Manfred Haake finished fifth, with Uli Schmied, in the double sculls at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. With non-Olympian Jochen Brückhändler, Haake won the East German national titles from 1964-66 and 1968-69. Both also won bronze medals, at the 1966 World and 1969 European Championships.
