Antal Kocsis started as a boxer in MÁVAG in 1923, then from 1924 to 1930 switched to Ferencváros TC. He achieved his first significant result - the Hungarian championship title in flyweight - in 1926. Between 1925 and 1929 he participated for the Hungarian national team twenty times. He achieved significant international achievements in 1927 and 1928; in 1927 he finished second at the European Championship and in the next year won the Olympic championship at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam. He was the first Olympic boxing champion in the history of Hungarian sports. With this victory, Kocsis also won the European Championship title, so he also became the first Hungarian European champion in boxing.
Kocsis turn professional in Germany but soon left for the United States. Using an anglicized form of his name, Tony Kocsis, he fought exclusively in North America barring five fights on a visit home to Hungary in 1931. He was highly rated by the boxing authorities after a win over former world title challengers Eladio ”Black Bill ”Valdes and a draw with Emile Pladner, but his career declined and he won only one of his last twelve fights.After a career as an athlete, he worked as a tailor. He visited Hungary for the first time in over 30 years in 1965. According to his will, after his death his ashes were scattered into the ocean.
Hungary
