Biography

Between 1929 and 1945 Lajos Szigeti won the national championship nine times in middle weight (1929, 1930, 1934, 1937, 1938) and lightweight (1935, 1939, 1942, 1945) in the colors of the FTC. His international career lasted twelve years, between 1928 and 1940, and he represented his country fifty-nine during this period. Szigeti won the 1934 European Championships Middleweight after losing in the final of the 1930 edition. He won a third medal, a bronze in 1937 at light-Heavyweight, and a fourth in the same division two years later. He also competed at the unofficial European Championships in 1942 in Germany, where he withdrew prior to the bronze medal match. Despite the outbreak of war, he travelled to the United States in 1940, after he gained selection to the all-European team in a contest between Europe and America. He competed two times at the Olympics although he surprisingly lost his first contest on both occasions.

In the early 1940s, he also boxed for a short time as a professional. Originally a carpenter, he later became a professional soldier. He won the army championship title two times. As a professional soldier from 1936 to 1945, Lajos Szigeti served in the air force’s warehouse as a material purchaser. After World War II, he regained the rank of officer and worked as a sports teacher and educator in the army. He retired in 1955.
