Biography

Fritz Feldmann was a member of the Zurich Rowing Club and competed in the 1936 Henley Regatta, where he won a gold medal with his squad in the coxed eights event. Regarded as the favorites in the event at the 1936 Summer Olympics, several of Feldmann’s teammates (Hermann Betschart, Karl Schmid, and Hans and Alex Homberger) elected to compete in the fours competitions, bringing Rolf Spring along for the coxed version. Although they took home a bronze and a silver medal in these tournaments, they were exhausted and failed to recover in time for the eights race, finishing sixth in a field of fourteen nations. Prior to World War II Feldmann received a PhD in aeronautical engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and later moved to the United States, where he lived the remainder of his life.
