Biography

Diane Braceland attended Penn State, graduating in 1971 and then rowed for Vesper Boat Club and the Long Beach Rowing Association. In addition to her Olympic appearance, Braceland competed at the 1973 European Championships and the 1974-75 World Championships. Braceland married 1976 Olympic rower Darrell Vreugdenhil and worked as a schoolteacher, obtaining an AMI Montessori Primary Certification from Ravenshill. She started at Gladwyne Montessori in 1977 as a physical education teacher, and after leaving for a few years she returned there in 2002. Her father George Braceland was a masters decathlete and was elected to the US Masters Hall of Fame. He also set the world’s record in the Indoor Rowing (ERG) heavyweight for age 90-95.
