Biography

Valerie McClain-Ward was a coxswain who attended UC Berkeley, graduating in 1980 with a degree in physical education and physiology. She rowed for the Lake Merritt Rowing Club. McClain-Ward made the ill-fated 1980 US Olympic team, and placed fourth at the 1984 Olympics with the coxed quad sculls. She won three silver medals at the World Championships, in the eights in 1981 and 1983, and the coxed quad sculls in 1982. McClain-Ward later worked as a manager at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki.
