Patricia Spratlen rowed at UC Berkeley, stroking the varsity eight. Spratlen helped Cal to titles at the Bay Area Rowing Festival, the Western Collegiate and NWRA Regional and a pair of Pacific Coast Championships. She made the 1980 and 1984 Olympic teams, only the second African-American woman to do so, after Anita DeFrantz. After graduation from Cal, Spratlen won a gold at the Lucerne International Regatta and rowed an eight at the 1979, 1981, and 1983 World Championships, winning silvers in 1981 and 1983, and a bronze in 1979.
