Biography

From 1960 to 1973 Moroccan boxer Mohamed Sourour dominated the national championships, competing at three different weight categories during his career. Sourour enjoyed success across Africa, winning his first international fight in 1961 in the Ivory Coast, and the Arab belt in Cairo in 1965. During the 1960s he also beat multiple European champions, including boxers from Switzerland, Belgium, and Yugoslavia.

Sourour boxed as a featherweight at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics where he beat Ali Mebarki before losing to Philip Waruinge. Four years later at the 1972 München Olympics he competed as a lightweight, losing in his first bout to Hungarian László Orbán. In between his two Olympic appearances, Sourour won bronze in the lightweight class at the 1971 Mediterranean Games in İzmir, Turkey. In the early 1970s he established the Atlas Circuit Marrakesh Boxing Association where he trained and coached future boxing champions.
