Biography

Regilio Tuur, of Surinamese origin, made the front pages in the Netherlands when he knocked out reiging World Champion Kelcie Banks in the first round of the 1988 Olympic featherweight competition. Tuur, a bronze medallist in the 1987 European Championships, could not convert the surprise win into a medal, exiting in the quarter-finals. He subsequently became professional, known as Tuurrific. After becoming European Champion in the super featherweight division, he won the vacant WBO title in 1994. He defended it successfully on six occasions, before retiring. After a failed attempt as a fashion designer, he made a comeback in 2001, but with little impact. In 2003, Tuur was sentenced to 20 months in jail for various violence offences, including the beating of his wife and the assault of a police officer.
