Biography

Regarded as one of the best referees in Italian football in the 1960s, Cesare Jonni refereed 263 Serie A matches between 1951-64, and more than 50 years after his final game (Trieste-Varese, 1 June 1964) his total was second only to the great Concetto Lo Bello. Jonni was in charge of the 1959 Italian Cup final between Internazionale and Juventus, and that same year he was the recipient of the Giovanni Mauro Award as Best Referee of the Year. He obtained his FIFA badge, and refereed the semi-final of the 1960 European Championship between Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union in France. Jonni also officiated in two matches at the Roma Olympics that year, and at the FIFA World Cup in Chile two years later, took charge of the Soviet Union-Uruguay match.
