Biography

Enzo Barbaresco started refereeing in 1954, and made his Serie A début in 1967. Between then and 1984 he took control of 164 top flight matches including the Milano, Roma and Genoa derbies. He also had control of many leading matches featuring the elite of Italian football: Juventus, Internazionale and A. C. Milan. He refereed one Italian Cup Final, between Juventus and Palermo in 1979. That same year he won the Giovanni Mauro Award as Best Referee of the Year.

A FIFA international referee since 1978, Barbaresco refereed many matches in the three leading UEFA club tournaments. In 1983 he was a linesman in the European Cup Winners’ Cup final in Göteborg between Aberdeen (managed by a young Alex Ferguson) and Real Madrid (managed by the legendary Alfredo di Stefano).

Barbaresco ran the line for Alberto Michelotti in the opening match in the 1980 European Championship between West Germany and the holders Czechoslovakia. His last game as a referee was at the 1984 Olympics when he was in charge of the Canada - Cameroon game at Boston. With the help of journalist Ornella Ferrari Gigante, Barberesco published his autobiography called Arbitrro Enzo Barbaresco di Cormòns. Storie di una vita in 2013.
