Biography

The music critic Robert Brussel was friends with many of the great French composers of his time. He was editor of the Revue d’art dramatique from 1897-1904, one of the two editorial secretaries of the magazine Musica (1902-1908), and - most notably - he wrote the music column of the daily Le Figaro for 35 years. He was one of the first critics to promote Sergei Diaghilev’s (1872-1929) “Ballets Russes” in the late 1900s. Brussel also played an important role in organizing concerts in Paris. In 1913, for example, he was involved in the world premiere of Le Sacre du printemps.

In 1922, Brussel founded the “Association française d’expansion et d’échanges artistiques” (AFEEA, “French association for artistic expansion and exchange”), later renamed the “Association française d’action artistique” (“French Association for Artistic Action”). Until 1938, he headed this association, which contributed significantly to the dissemination of French musical creations abroad. For example, the AFEEA promoted Maurice Ravel’s concerts during his North American tour in 1928.

Brussel was made first a knight, then an officer of the Legion of Honor.
