Biography

Jean Chantavoine was a French musicologist and biographer. He published many books and articles, including biographies of Beethoven, Liszt, Saint-Saëns, and Mozart. In 1933, he discovered the existence of Bizet’s Symphony in C major and was also the first to publish many of Beethoven’s manuscripts and letters.

Chantavoine was secretary general of the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique.
