László Buronyi began his sports career in 1934 as a wrestler of Erzsébeti MTK. Two years later he won the Hungarian youth championship in the middleweight division. In 1939 the EMTK wrestling department was disbanded and Buronyi joined the WMTK, where he increasingly turned his attention to weightlifting. He also won his first adult championship title in this sport. The name of his association changed several times (Csepeli MTK, Csepeli Vasas SK), but as a competitor from Csepel he won 12 Hungarian championship titles, including winning both the middleweight and light-heavyweight titles in 1950.
Buronyi transferred from Csepeli to Bp. Dózsa at the age of 34, where he won five more championship titles. When he retired in 1964, at the age of 46, he won the Budapest Championship. For his performance, he was also awarded the honorary championship title, as no other Hungarian weightlifter has ever won so many championship gold medals. Buronyi competed in two Olympics, finishing tenth in the middleweight (82.5 kg) in 1948. In 1952 he competed in the light-heavyweight but was injured in the snatch and had to withdraw. After the two Olympics he celebrated his most memorable international appearance in 1957 when he finished fourth in light-heavyweight at the European Championships in Katowice. After finishing his sports career, he worked as a locksmith. His son, Tibor, was a footballer for Csepel SC in the first division.
