Biography

Karel Saitl took up weightlifting during World War II, but did not reach his peak in the sport until the 1950s. He won the Czechoslovakian national championship in the bantamweight division in 1951, 1952, and 1953 and attended the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, where he placed tenth. He had more success at the European Championships, where he took silver in 1953 and bronze in 1956, and the World Championships, where he won bronze in 1952 and 1953. He also trained for the 1948 London Olympics, but was ultimately unable to attend. In his later years, he competed internationally in masters’-level tournaments and continued to do so into his 80s.
