Biography

Israil Arsamakov’s best international tournament was probably his last, the 1988 Olympics. During his career, Arsamakov won Olympic gold in 1988, was World Champion in 1988, winning silver at the 1986 World Championships, and was the 1986 European Champion. Domestically Arsamakov won Soviet light-heavyweight titles in 1981, 1985 and 1988, taking light-heavyweight silver in 1982 and 1987. He also won the middle-heavyweight silver at the 1982 Soviet Championships and Soviet light-heavyweight cups in 1979 and 1980. Arsamakov set one light-heavyweight snatch world record in 1982. After finishing his sporting career following the 1988 Olympics, Arsamakov worked as a weightlifting coach.
