Biography

Coming from present-day Ukraine, Igor Rybak competed in just two international championships, but won both of them. First, he won the 1956 European middleweight title in Helsinki, ahead of compartriot Ravil Khabutdinov. At the Olympics later that year, he dropped back to the lightweights, but again beat Khabutdinov for the gold. Thereafter, Rybak settled on the middleweight, but didn’t manage to qualify for international tournaments due to the tough Soviet competition. He never won a USSR title, except for a national team title in 1955. He also earned four Ukranian titles. After being dropped from the national team in 1960, he pursued a career in sports medicine.
